Tropical Fruit - Part 1
(Two different kinds of bananas that grow on our neighbor's trees... both are delicious)
There is an orchard on this property, full of tropical fruit trees. There are at least 7 different varieties that I can see, if you count the pineapple plants, and banana trees down the road, but most of the fruit are a complete mystery to me.
When i first learned about the orchard I imagined sipping fresh mango smoothies or piƱa coladas while watching the sunset. Instead, we found these beasts:
(What... the heck? Is that?)
I did some research at the grocery store and found drink mix with pictures of the same fruit, along with the name: guanabana.
(Cool-aid proves to be useful for the first time ever.)
One You Tube video later I was ready to prepare and eat my first guanabana.
But it turns out I picked this guy a little too early (maybe a lot early). It was not ripe at all, the flesh was hard and tasteless, and I ended up tossing it out.
Apparently the outside should be slightly yellow when ripe. Thankfully there's still another one on the tree. Lesson #342 of living in Costa Rica learned: wait for the fruit to ripen before you harvest. Check.
Hi, I recognize the fruit! We had them in Singapore too, I think they called it a custard apple and I believe it is from the same family as the durian (taste much better than the durian). Enjoy exploring all the great tropical frits and veggies. Always like to read your blog!
