New Adventures... and Chocolate
We made it back to Monteverde this week and are getting settled in. It's great to be out of the humidity, and back in a place where walking to the grocery store only takes 10 minutes instead of an hour. The air smells like pine trees and the horses next door come out to greet us when we walk past.
We are excited about some work opportunities that have come our way this week. It's actually more like starting our own business, but we are pursuing something that we both love: food! A friend that owns a nearby hotel is giving us the opportunity to use her kitchen and make a couple meals for the community and guests. We can keep all the proceeds, just paying her a little for the use of her kitchen. It's awesome because Michael has always wanted to own a restaurant, and we are both unashamed foodies. This will give us a chance to practice our kitchen skills on a small scale, and develop some of our favorite recipes.
We are also going to bake things like cinnamon rolls and (hopefully) sell them at the local Whole Foods Market. We made our first batch yesterday and they were delicious, so I'm hoping they will be good sellers.
I think the thing I'm most excited about, however, is the chance we will get on Sunday to learn a very important life skill: how to milk a cow. One of the local farmers provides milk, butter and yogurt to the community and we convinced him to teach us how to milk. We are volunteering at this point, but maybe we can get him to trade work for butter in the future. That way, when we make cinnamon rolls we can reduce our cost significantly. Butter is expensive here.
On a different note, happy Mother's Day! We love you moms! And Grandmas! Thanks for being awesome and teaching us how to cook. We miss you, oh, and I got you these:
And, some genuine Costa Rican chocolates:
